An extraction is a process used to remove a tooth from its socket in the gum. A regular dentist, an oral surgeon, or a periodontist typically performs it. A dental extraction is the removal of teeth from the dental alveolus (socket) in the alveolar bone. It is also known as a tooth extraction, exodontia, exodontics, or, colloquially, tooth pulling.

Dentists use extraction forceps and elevators to grab or squeeze the tooth and remove it. These are tools that resemble pliers and are used to grab and pull teeth. A dentist typically possesses many pairs of extraction forceps. Each can apply pressure directly to teeth and is shaped to fit teeth.
